I know where I will be September 15th at 8am…. supporting the Tunnel to Towers run in Savannah!
The story behind the ‘Tunnel to Towers’ run that is held across the nation, is that it all began with the heroic steps of Stephen Siller, FDNY. On September 11th, just as Siller got off the late shift with the FDNY he heard the chilling words come over the scanner. There had been a plane hit the towers. After a quick call to his wife to let her know he would be late, he returned to the station to get his gear. Once suited in 60lbs of gear and on his way to the towers, he found the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel closed to traffic. Siller got out and ran the 1.7 miles through the tunnel and was picked up by another responding crew. Never to be seen again. (sources here and here).
Cities around the country have come together to honor Stephen Siller’s Legacy through local 5k’s. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation helps to provide smart homes for those who have returned from service and are severely injured. They also have scholarship programs through the ‘Legacy of Love’ portion of the foundation and much more.
In Savannah, we are honoring by having funds “designated specifically to building “Smart Homes” for two severely wounded veterans in Georgia; SFC Mike Schlitz, U.S. Army (Columbus, Ga.) and Cpl. Todd Love, USMC (Atlanta)”. How cool is that??
