Signed Up For My First Tri

I’ve wanted to. I’ve dreamed about it. I’ve talked about it.

I needed to JUST DO IT. Thanks Nike for the confidence. Game on World, Game on Victoria.

So I registered for my first Triathlon.

Want to join me? Register HERE!

Know what else is cool? Hank has been busting a hump and making work happen. He has a sweet tri kit and is ready for July 29th. I can’t wait to have another IRL #FitFluential friend and have someone else there I know!

So let’s talk about this tri–

-  I am registered in the Athena Category. Yep. 150+ lbs females. Part of me hates this, part of me is hoping to love this if I can not come in last in my age category. I am almost out of the Athena, so I might as well own it while I can and recognize that it will be my body doing the work regardless of the pounds on the scale #strongissexy

- The swim portion I am really excited for. It’s only a 600m open water swim in a lake, so I anticipate feeling strong.

Getting for “Savannah Slow Ride” wearing my helmet, run vest, & head lamp. As. A. Joke.

- I am about as nervous for the bike portion as I was for the stinkin’ Prom 10 years ago. It’s a 12 mile ride. I don’t have clip-ins nor baskets. Maybe I’ll get baskets by the end of the month, so I can push AND pull my legs. Obviously, I have to pedal quicker than I did on the slowride… and not have a beverage except my nuun.

- The run… I have done a few bricks of bike to run. It hurts. But it’s a 5k. I am going to work on this and keep up my HIIT workouts plus my speed.

-I am really worried about what to wear. I don’t want to layout the money on a tri kit if I won’t be doing more than one or two of these races.

- Transitions- move it or lose it. Is that a good mentality to have??

Any good tips? Anyone else racing on July 29th in Charleston?

  1. Definitely don’t hate being in the Athena category– I think it’s ridiculous that 150lb is the cutoff for that category– drives me nuts!

You are going to do so flipping awesome!

  2. Good luck! I was going to do a tri, and I bought pretty inexpensive Sugoi tri shorts for it. (I ended up getting injured biking and didn’t do it, maybe another day!) I’m so scared of biking that it keeps me from signing up for another. I figure the tri shorts with any shirt or sport bra type top is pretty good!

  3. This is SO exciting. Good luck and I’ll be cheering you on. I don’t know much about triathlons but I would like to do one, one day!

  4. Charlotte Giddens says:

Yeah! This is so amazing! You will do wonderfully! Can’t wait to hear/read your race report!
    Get it girl!

  5. You.Are.Going.To.Rock.It. Good luck!!!

  6. Girl, I am so stinkin pumped for you on this. I keep telling myself all with time. I have only been running/racing for 7 months, I don’t have to do all the things in one year. But it is sooooo hard to restrain! I want to do a tri so badly. Part of me has the same issues as I did with racing, not sure how to get invovled, etc, we talked about this. I need you to just drag me! You will do great!!!!

  7. It’s a Sprint Tri! The only thing you’ve got to really conquer is the bike portion and the transition, which I’m sure you can do. You’ve got this! You finished a marathon, you can do anything! As for what to wear, IDK. Is there somewhere online you can get tri kit online cheap?

  8. Holly Jenkins says:

Can I be you? You are so inspiring and motivating. I look forward to reading your blog and can’t wait to hear how you rock it! Keep it up….I’m depending on you! :)

  9. Veronica says:

YEAH! Go you!!! Just a quick suggestion: I’d put your hair in a tight french braid. It’ll fit under your swim cap, and you won’t have to re-adjust it to put your bike helmet on. I made the mistake by putting my hair in a high bun before the swim, and then my bike helmet wouldn’t fit – doh! So I lost time fixing my hair. Good luck!

  10. Awesome!! I’m in the same boat- racing my first triathlon this Sunday! I’m a bit nervous about the swim and bike, too, but it should be a fun experiment. I lucked out and am borrowing a pair of tri shorts and a tri top from a friend, but I was told a swimming top and shorts would also be fine. (Warm enough here we don’t need wetsuits). I’m happy to share the other things I’ve learned if you have questions!

  11. no tips.
    just CHEEEEEEEEEEEEERS

  12. Fun! My dream someday is to do an Ironman! I havent done a tri yet :( Happy training! You will do awesome!
