Book Club and Knee Update

Greetings from inside of my Savannah hospitality counterpart’s rental car! We are road warriors today going to the Upstate of SC!

******

I love Book Club days. It means I get to see some of the sassiest girls this side of the Mississippi. Each month, one of the girls host us at their house for cocktails, food and fun. And possibly conversation on the book of the month, but that is not necessarily a rule in our book.

Brooke was our host last night and what a feast she prepared. It was a Mexican fiesta complete with her magic sangria. Say hello to my gorgeous friend Kristen…. she is running the half marathon at RnR in two weeks… and is going to kill it!

It was also Brooke’s birthday this week, so I got some custom Two Smart Cookies and Kristen got balloons to help her ring in “26″. ;)

Wine, Books, and Cupcakes. Just the way every girl should ring in her birthday!

But before I got my necessary girl time, I had my appointment with the Sports Medicine Doc. I had three main questions I wanted to cover: 1) Can I complete my four “run” goals without further injury? 2) Would losing a few pounds help any? 3) Why did the PA/Doc dude say I would need a knee replacement eventually?

Pretty much it boils down to my old injury from 15 years ago of completely torn ACL, meniscus, and small cracks in the knee cap. He thinks that the meniscus has some degeneration going on, plus some more cracks in the knee cap (also called fisherins). I am to lay off running high mileage for now and can do cross training. We will do an MRI in a few weeks to see just how much damage there is and go from there.

I asked about the Ultra and the Jacksonville Marathon, and he said that he wouldn’t tell me not to do it but that he would not train for it. So… I am going to ease into cross training (bike/spinning, yoga, yogalates etc) and wait until after the MRI to see where I go with my running. I am not going to run RnR with my Dad and postponing my leap into the world of Ultras.

I am upset, disappointed, frustrated, but know that I can still be active so I am thankful for that. And who knows, maybe I will get super quick at shorter races (ie 10k’s) that don’t require the higher mileage for training ;)

  1. Mareesa L. Torres says:

I’m so bummed for you, friend…but glad you’re staying positive and focusing on cross training :) If you start spinning again, let me know :)

  2. Holly Jenkins says:

You’ll be the queen of 10K’s!

  3. Coming to visit Greenville? :)

  4. Aww…I’m sorry girl! I know you must be bummed but hopefully the MRI will show some good news in a few weeks

  5. So sorry to hear that. I know I would be devastated at first, but in the long run (pun intended), if the extended break from running long distances will do more good for your body, then I’ll take it. Life is short, however there are plenty of other opportunities in life to challenge yourself!
