*I am an Elite Athlete*

Most people laugh at me when I say “I am an Elite Athlete” with a completely straight face. Especially when I say this to my co-workers before I dive into a cannoli at a local Italian restaurant; as in…. “It’s ok, I am an Elite Athlete”. My fellow #DetermiNation (#DNation) runners also laugh when I call them Elite Athletes. Maybe even an eye roll on our 7am long runs…. it could just be the time of the run!

Well I figured that I would dissect the Elite Athlete for y’all… hey, fellow DNation peeps.. this is for you too!

#1: Less than 2% of all Americans have completed a half marathon, even less have completed a Full Marathon. I am Elite.

#2: I am about to embark on a training program that I am sure is going to kick my @ss on certain days. 3x week running, 2-3x week cross-training. Perfectly fitting before our wedding! I am Elite.

#3: I am fundraising for something larger than myself. I am fundraising for the American Cancer Society for Research, Education, Patient Services, and Advocacy. Hope. Progress. Answers. I am Elite.

So please feel free to call yourself Elite. Because we all are. No matter who  you are, what race you are running, what charity you are fundraising for, and how  you are training. You are taking those steps to better yourself and better someone’s life. YOU ARE ELITE.

First Day of School

Let me digress for a moment to two of last weeks workouts that I am really proud of! Pardon, if you follow on daily mile- you will have already seen them :)

#1: 1,300 swim- should have been a mile but apparently I read the website wrong and got the pool closing times wrong. Good solid swim, felt great to get my feet wet again. Swimming is the only sport that I feel confident in. I have a bet with the fiance that I can beat him on the 1.2 mile race in July. AND our friend is every making a custom trophy for whichever one wins…. screw the real prizes at the race, I want that d@mn trophy.

#2: Tempo workout- Katie and I took off. And by took off, we ran the first mile at 10:42, mile #2 (12:15ish as easy mile), mile #3 11:45, and mile 4….well, we did it… maybe 13 min. I was so tired from mile 1, but all in all, a great workout!!! Plus at 5:20am, it was already like 2348290842038% humidity!

Ok, back to the main topic! SCHOOL IS IN SESSION and here are the teachers!!

That’s Lydia, she’s like the Principal…. but way nicer!

Ok… now go RUN ALL OUT for the Savannah Mile and meet us in the the Square for some free food, free swag, awards, and fun! Why wasn’t school like this? Oh because you didn’t have to run 26.2 miles at the end….

The Savannah American Cancer Society DetermiNation runners are training with C.R.E.W., so we had about 15 of them make the big kick-off yesterday. The rest of the near 50 runners are scattered between Savannah, Atlanta, NC, TX, Maine etc…. if you want to run for DetermiNation just click on it and find a race near you! We would love to have you for the Rock ‘n’ Roll in Savannah! It’s our inaugural…. November 5th…. COME ON!!

About 1/3 of the runners prior to the race!!

For this weekend I found some hills…. so in just a few, I am off to tackle a brick workout. 1 mile run, 20 min bike, 2 mile run…. hopefully I don’t roll back down the hills on my bike!! Everyone have a great Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to all that have served and are serving our great country!

It’s the End of the World as We Know It…

So if you follow my twitter account (@V_T_B), you know that I have been hijacking internet from the local Kroger/Starbucks since my wireless card has yet to show up. I am actually right now at work taking over the wireless from my laptop (hey now, it’s after 5pm) before a client dinner!

I have been anxiously waiting to blog about our Saturday DetermiNation Fun Run. And boy was it great! We went to a new location where the Rapture wouldn’t get us, but apparently we were wrong. None of us brought an arsenal to protect us for what was about to happen next. Here we are, six runners just minding our own business and BAM! Out of nowhere this happens….

Check out the 8 Deerflies on my upper shoulders and 3 in hair!!

We were going to run 6 miles around the 3 mile trail…. so after running three miles with our legs and swimming three with our arms to swat away the Raptures coming to get us… we made a group decision to call in early to our safe haven. BREAKFAST TIME!! That’s a whole other story ;)

zzzzzzzz

Cheerleader or Runner?

But before that~ we decided for a photo shoot. We called it “Can you find the morning runner??”

Giving Jerame a lift! Go DetermiNation!

What a great group of people I tell you! So fun and they put up with me talking about my runner’s toe and all my antics…. that’s not easy, you know! Ok, well time for some good fun. And back to the workout grind tomorrow. Had a killa migraine this morning. Tomorrow’s workout- not sure, either biking or intervals. Gonna throw in some swims soon too. Because Tommy and I have a bet that I won’t beat him in the “Swim the Farm” 1.2 mile race in July…. we’ll see Who’s the Boss??

Mini-Me’s

I look super tiny at 4:45am….

So my internet card is broken…. like on it’s last leg, looks like its hanging by an electrical thread. So I am sitting in my local Starbucks that is housed in a Kroger, blogging. This is not all that bad; good people watching, good coffee, and the odd looks I get for a Thursday evening while all the mommies go past me with screaming kids as I sit smiling typing away!

So let me back up to Tuesday’s workout- it was speed day. Let me first preface this with: there is NOTHING about my body that says fast, except for my mouth. I am from New York originally, so I talk fast and hand gesture fast. Other than that, I can swim relatively fast compared to the average person but that’s all I got. Oh, I did win a baby bottle chugging contest at a baby shower once. That was fast. But in all seriousness… I am not a fast person. But it’s my goal to get quicker and to push myself. So Katie and I went to the Y track and extended trail for some speedwork. We did light jog warm-up and then 1 minute fast, 3 minute easy x 5…. the first one went great… then I had to pee (tmi??). As in, I won’t make it four more times without seriously embarrassing myself. Now I have not had this issue before as an elite athlete (ha!)….. so I was freakin’ out and probably scared the other women on the trail as I darted out of the woods back onto the trail to continue my run. Whew, much lighter and four sprint series and a cool-down jog, I felt great!!

Wednesday was my prescribed rest day. And it was glorious. I even met a celebrity! I like to think of him as the man that whisks me away on all my travel…. the one to treat me to tropical locales, whimsical destinations no one has taken me so far. Of course, I am talking about the real Travelocity Gnome!! And I should mention, he makes me pay for my travel. Or my actual in life man pay. Bummer. I wish this 1.5 ft man would foot the bill. But at least it’s discounted and he’s cute!

My mini-boyfriend

Thursday- Katie, Indie (Dog), and I did a 5k tempo pace. The first mile was good (holding at 11:14 mile), the last two miles kept at 12:30-45 pace. Not what I was going for, but we ran a full mile then walked a minute then ran a mile, walked a minute…. but the purpose of tempo is to keep the tempo. So I guess I did alright! I felt great afterwards so that is all that matters.

Later today, I ran back into my man the Gnome and ate taffy, little sammies, and tea (sweet garden party at a local museum). And had a nice dinner of Skinny Caramel Macchiato… not the best for the diet! Tomorrow is Hunter’s turn to get a little workout! 30 minute walk with my little man!

So I am going to sit in Kroger for a little longer and play a game of “How Many Aisle Clean-Ups in One Hour”… then go home and get ready to tackle Friday!! Have a great night y’all!!

Two Christmas Lights and a Partridge in a Healthy Pear Tree

FA LALALALA I counted two houses that still had their Christmas lights on just twinkling away in the early morning light.

I biked the two miles over to Katie’s and we went around a few different neighborhoods on our Island for a total of 7 miles. I then peeled off and biked the scenic way home with the sun sneaking up over the marsh. I am sure y’all are getting annoyed with my rubbing it in, but we really live in a dream. Coastal living is where my heart is. No wonder I couldn’t last more than a year in Portland, Oregon. I loved the town, food, beer, and lattes (if you ever visit Gresham, Oregon… you MUST tell me, because I will give you a few must eats!!). Probably how I gained back my college weight back (lost it while living in Key West) through constant lattes to help me feel better about living in a constant gray fog.

I have stayed a pretty consistent weight my whole life. I still have pants from eight years ago that I fit in, so I am pretty happy with that. BUT I am not satisfied. I want to be an athlete. I want to be fit. I want to be someone that when people look at me, they can tell that I am a runner! I did though peak my Soph/Jr year of college. At my heaviest weight, I was so frustrated. Even though I swam for my college, yes we were D-3…  I was still an athlete. I have always battled with this issue. But now I can tackle it, because I have recognized the issue and am owning it. (PS- I am now about 30lbs less than my heaviest weight with a goal to lose 15-20 more).
At my heaviest, 21 years old

With my CREW training and eating right, I will be fit and own my health. I want to one day be the mom with a jogging stroller beating people at the local 5k and 10k. It will happen, because I will make it happen!

I probably won’t talk much about weight issues on here, because this is my running blog and progress towards the marathon. Plus I am not comfortable with putting my body issues out there… but who knows!

So back to my workout! I biked 11 miles this morning and due to storms tonight, my Sunset Bike Club is bringing it inside and just eating. I brought lasagna for the group and bought Amy’s Lean lasagna for myself to eat! Couple that with fresh salad and a glass of wine and should be a solid night looking out on the marsh at our friend, LB’s house! Tomorrow’s workout is speed work…. if its raining, I’m hitting the TM!!

Junk in my Trunk

See how long it is….

I woke up this morning eager to run my 6 miles (true 6miles) because I had some sweet gear to debut. Yesterday, while at Wally World picking up a pot for my garden I found this Danskin shirt! So I was wondering how I would like it since it was only $5!!! It was long and super soft.

I went out to out to the trail and met up with Laurie, Jerame, Katie, and Indie (her dog!). Now I am quite a jelly belly that her dog could even phathom running 6 miles…. as mine wouldn’t even budge this morning or make it 0.006 miles let alone 6 miles!

So we do a mini photo shoot before the run– lights, camera, run—

Katie & Indie

And off we ran…. if anyone follows me on twitter (v_t_b), I was complaining of Friday how I forgot my ipod. One of my twitter friends said that she tries to run sometimes without because her ipod has failed her on a few races before. Well I responded (in my head), “that sucks, mine has never done that”. Well folks, today was my day. Today was that day that I would have to channel my own inner rock band and run from within. It’s kinda of hard. I really like to run to rap music, yes, you can find that amusing… or you may not judging from the below photo. But I like to run to killer beats. I like to imagine myself ‘dropping it likes its hot’ like in the SunDrop commerical (ps-I think that’s gonna be my Halloween costume!!! AWESOME!).

Showing my Junk- ie Fuel Belt

Anyways, so Katie was gracious enough to slow her pace down and run with me and put her music on speaker and let me groove to the beat of Prince, Rhianna, and some other reggae stuff she had coming out of her smartphone. Nice how technology can be a lifesaver.

Laurie & Jerame

We get to the halfway point at 36:50, which is right on par for what I run a 5k in (hey, I never said you were following the blog of Ryan Hall!). And last week, I ran 5.5 miles in 1:13:50. So I want to get as close to that as possible (which would be awesome, since I am adding 1/2 mile). The last two miles were a struggle to keep pace, but Katie was a great motivator and I finished in 1:16:59 for a full 6 mile run. Kept my 4:1′s and a solid 12:30-12:45 mile pace going the mile time.

The new fuelbelt was great, much better than my old one with the single bottle. I just wish the small bottles were insulated like the camleback handheld! And the new shirt was awesome. It didn’t ride up and didn’t lose stretchiness with all the sweating. I always didn’t sweat myself through it! I may go back and get more in all the fun colors…. at $5 a pop, you just can’t stop!!!

Tomorrow’s workout: 10 mile bike ride in the morning and 11 miles at night with my fun friends with Sunset Bike Club :) Have a great Sunday, y’all. I sure will…. the fiance comes home today after being gone for nine day!!! yay for date night!!

Pre-Crew 2

So my title rhymed… must be a poet and I didn’t even know it!

Yesterday (Friday the 13th), I forgot my ipod for my run. I have never run without music. The old VTB would have just driven home and kicked up her heels and not run. But not the new VTB who is on a mission. I sucked it up and ran in the 88 degree heat. Nothing but me and my 2 feet. I actually even kept a good pace with keeping my 4:1pace. Quicker than last time at the same locale…. one day at a time, one day at a time.

Maybe one day, I will break a 30 min 5k?!?! One day at a time!

This morning (May 14th), I was scheduled to do p90x yoga. Even after a little girls night out; I woke up at 6am and walked the Huntman. I popped in the dvd and got to work…… then it went downhill somewhere in between minutes 10-20. With Hunter licking my face and the lack of motivation from the tv screen. I remembered why I disliked fitness dvds. I thrive off of in person classes. The p90x yoga is 90 minutes long and I only lasted 20m. Since it does jump right into warriors, sun salutations, planks etc…. I don’t feel horrible, but I still like a slacker. I am going to stretch some more tonight and get ready for my 6 mile run tomorrow…….. or maybe stretch on the beach….

Today’s score…. 3/10…. woke up, tried and did some!

Jitters…

So I am getting a little nervous for CREW. No, not the prep sport that those twins that “came up” with Facebook excel at! But C.R.E.W., Collaborative Relationships Empowering Workouts!! This training is through my local Fleet Feet holds. I will be running with our DNation athletes and those who are also training for the RnRSav Full marathon. It’s extensive training that also focuses on nutrition, well-being, and being fit!
It’s like the first day of school jitters! Will I be the slowest, fattest, worst dressed?! Will I have to pee in the middle of our run or will I sweat more than all the other girls?! UGH! I am already having heart palpitations. Ok, I am being slightly dramatic. I am actually really excited to start formalized training to make sure I cross the line at 26.2 miles with no crowns being thrown on the ground. WDW 2009 Redemption.
So to hold me accountable and get me ready for CREW even further, I am posting my workouts on here for my few followers (and Laurie who comments when I don’t blog!). Here are the workouts and I will post after the workouts my results (hopefully successful).

CREW kicks off at the Savannah Mile on the 28th! I then unfortunately have to travel for work the next week, but I have the workouts and will do then at the oceanfront location. I know, I know…. it sucks to be me :) I will, I can, do this!

Here I go!!!

No More Taco Hell

I talked to my friend, Laurie about how beautiful last week’s run was at the Rails to Trails (RTT). So this morning, Laurie and her boyfriend Jerame joined me for a six miler. Which I am still not convinced is 6 miles; some say 5.7, while some Garmins say 5.3…. wide discrepancy, maybe it’s the Savannah ghosts messing with technology!

Anyways, we met at 9am and it was already about 75 degrees with a slight breeze. But boy, oh boy was it a gorgeous morning! We ran towards the prayer flags doing 4:1′s and kept a 12:30 pace the first three miles…

Can you see Laurie & I?!?

So we get to the prayer flags and enjoy a few photos and even Jerame tries to climb the rope tied to the tree! We then turned around and ran back….. now yesterday I was tweeting about how I made made food decisions while at my great friend, Nicole’s graduation from FSU (Juris Doctorate AND MS in Econ… yay she is a badass!). So not your typical day of pre-run food…. so at mile 4, Taco Hell was creeping up in my belly and I could swear it wanted to say hi! Thankfully it did not!

RTT Sign (Note Prayer Flags)

Good news, even though my last two miles were painfully slow- I still managed to beat my time by 2 minutes from last weekend!!

After the run, Laurie & Jerame decided to join me at the beach (oh the joys of Coastal Living!) for a few hours. What a great Sunday Funday!!
